Dr. M. Vasanth Kumar Shetty

BIOGRAPHY

Dr. M. Vasanth Kumar Shetty was born on 8 May 1924 at Mambettu, Udupi Taluk, in the erstwhile Madras Presidency. He received his early education in Mulki, Mangalore, Poona, and Miraj Medical School.
After graduating from Madras University, he completed his internship and obtained a Postgraduate Diploma in Radiology from Madras Medical College.

Academic & Professional Contributions

Dr. Shetty became a member of the All India Radiological Association in 1954 and served as Secretary of the Indian Journal of Radiology from 1958 to 1960.
He served as an examiner for DMR and MD examinations at several universities, participated in numerous academic bodies, and authored around thirty research papers published in reputed journals.

INTERNATIONAL TRAINING

Dr. Shetty underwent specialized training in Paediatric Radiology in the United States under Dr. John Caffey, regarded as the Father of Paediatric Radiology. After three years of advanced training, he successfully passed the American Board of Radiology Examination in 1964.

Professional Career

Upon returning to India, Dr. Shetty was appointed Professor of Paediatric Radiology at Madras Medical College and served as Chief of Radiology at the Institute of Child Health and Hospital for Children, one of India's largest pediatric hospitals.

International Representation

Dr. Shetty represented India at the International Congress of Radiology in Montreal (1962) and presented a paper at the American Paediatric Association in San Francisco (1964). He also chaired a scientific session at the European Congress of Radiology in Barcelona, Spain.

Awards & Recognitions

In 1980, the Indian Academy of Paediatrics honored Dr. Shetty as one of the best teachers in paediatric-oriented specialties. He also served as Chairman of the Organizing Committee for the All India Radiology Conference held in Madras in 1993.

Post-Retirement Contributions

After retiring from government service, Dr. Shetty headed the Radiology and Imaging Section at the Dr. K. M. Rai Memorial Medical Centre, Madras.

Professor Arcot Gajaraj was a distinguished radiologist, renowned educator, and one of India's most respected pioneers in the field of Radiology. He served as Professor and Director of the Barnard Institute of Radiology and Cancer, Madras Medical College and Government General Hospital, Chennai. He also held the positions of Senior Consultant and Director of Radiology Education at Apollo Hospitals and Senior Consultant at Dr. Rai Memorial Medical Centre, Chennai.

Professional Career

Following his radiology training at the upgraded Barnard Institute of Radiology and Cancer, Professor Gajaraj began his academic and clinical career as a Lecturer and Radiologist at Stanley Medical College and Hospital.
Through his dedication to teaching, clinical excellence, and leadership, he rose through the academic ranks to become Professor and Head of the Department.

Throughout his distinguished career, Professor Gajaraj held several key leadership positions, including Professor and Director of the Barnard Institute of Radiology and Cancer, Director of Radiology Education at Apollo Hospitals, and Senior Consultant at Dr. Rai Memorial Medical Centre, Chennai.

Contributions to Radiology Education

Professor Gajaraj played a significant role in radiology education and the advancement of medical imaging in India. He mentored generations of medical students and radiologists while contributing to the modernization and growth of radiological practice across the country.
